The 2026 California GOP Convention, held from April 10 to April 12 at the beautiful bayside San Diego Sheraton on Harbor Drive, stands out as a key event for our club’s support and education efforts. This gathering offers members a unique chance to engage directly with party activities, meet candidates, and participate in important voting processes. Many members may hear about conventions but remain unsure about what actually happens or how decisions are made. This post sheds light on the convention’s highlights, the involvement of our club members, and why attending this event can be a valuable experience.
Members Who Attended the Convention
Our April Treasurer’s Report reveals that nine club members received subsidies to attend the convention. These members were reimbursed for their convention registration fee, reflecting the club’s commitment to supporting active participation. The members who attended include:
Karen Barton
Carol Buser
Cathy Carroll
Erin Miller
Valerie Nadalini
Vickie Kerley
Karen Moyers
Brita Lindstrom
Mary Anne Wentink
This financial support allowed members to fully engage in the convention’s activities without the burden of personal expense.
Special Events Attended by Members
Several members took part in notable events during the convention. Karen Barton, Valerie Nadalini, and Cathy Carroll attended the Gala Dinner, where Senator Ted Cruz was the keynote speaker. This event provided an opportunity to hear from a prominent national figure and connect with fellow attendees.
Karen Barton also attended the Prayer Breakfast, which featured Former Mayor of Stockton, CA, Kevin Lincoln. The breakfast was described as inspiring, offering a moment of reflection and community among attendees.
What Happens at the Convention
For many, conventions might seem like a mystery. The 2026 CA GOP Convention was a lively gathering featuring candidate booths where representatives shared their views and campaign promises. It resembled a fan fest, with enthusiastic supporters and volunteers.
Two club members, Vickie Kerley and Jocelyn Mahittipongse, volunteered at Herb Morgan’s booth. Morgan is the GOP endorsed candidate for State Controller, and their presence helped promote his campaign and engage with voters.
Thanks to Brita Lindstrom’s efforts, many club members were able to participate as delegates. This role allowed them to cast individual votes for statewide candidates, directly influencing the party’s endorsements. The official list of endorsed candidates is available at cagop.org for those interested in reviewing the outcomes.
Voting and Endorsements
One of the most talked-about results was the lack of a gubernatorial endorsement. The convention required a 60% threshold for endorsement, but the candidates, Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco, received 48% and 49% of delegate votes. Some delegates chose not to endorse any candidate, reflecting a divided preference within the party.
This outcome highlights the competitive nature of the race and the importance of delegate participation. It also shows that endorsements are not guaranteed, even for leading candidates.
Candidate Speeches and Support
Attendees had the chance to hear from gubernatorial candidates Chad Bianco and Steve Hilton multiple times. Both candidates brought energy and strong support from their followers. Their speeches offered insight into their platforms and vision for California.
Media Coverage and Recognition
Following the voting process, Karen Barton and Carol Buser were interviewed by the San Diego Tribune. Both were quoted in an article published on April 12, where their insights were described as “brilliant.” This media attention underscores the active role our club members play in the political process and the respect they command.
Why Members Should Consider Attending Future Conventions
The 2026 CA GOP Convention proved to be an educational and engaging event. It offers members a chance to:
Meet candidates and party leaders
Volunteer and support campaigns

Supporting attendance at the convention aligns with our club’s mission to educate and empower members. It also strengthens our collective voice within the California GOP.
